British approach to end alienation of young Muslims along the right track, but flawed

The British government has reportedly begun implementing citizenship classes in Islamic schools in Britain: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/faith/article4357196.ece. The underlying hypothesis is sound, that be teaching young Muslims their secular rights and responsibilities in an effort to decrease their feeling of alienation in British society is a good one. Unfortunately however, the focus on inculcating "Britishness" rather democratic values more broadly could undermine the effort. Young Muslims in Britain who already feel marginalized and alienated are not likely to respond to appeals to patriotism, but rather are more likely to gain an appreciation of the democratic values that underpin Britain's society if those values, minus national labels, are the focus. Some Muslims view Western national identities that often have assimiliationist overtones as being in opposition to their identities as Muslims. By emphasizing the values of social justice and individual rights and responsibilities as the foundations of both democratic and Islamic worldviews, these efforts could have a greater likelihood of success and help a deeper patriotism based on those shared values develop.

Newsweek: "The New Face of Islam"
